Zumbro Valley Audubon Society

Programs and Field Trips

ZVAS has programs on the 4th Tuesday of each month except in December (when the Christmas Bird Count is held).  ZVAS programs are held at Quarry Hill Nature Center, 701 Silver Creek Road NE, Rochester, MN (see the map below).  Everyone is welcome to attend, whether an Audubon member or not.  The social gathering begins at 6:30 pm and the meeting begins at 7:00 pm.

ZVAS has field trips that take place throughout the year.  Many of these use the Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC) east side parking lot as the gathering location.  The parking lot is on the east side of Heintz Hall - take 4th street east from downtown or County 9 west from the stoplight at East Circle Drive (County 22).

 - Glaciers, Floods, and Farms: The Unlikely and Surprising History (and Future) of the Zumbro River

Take a crash course through the 4.5 billion year history of the Zumbro River Watershed from ancient mountains, to ocean and land, from ice to water, and from prairie and woods to farmland and city. Learn how we got our bedrock and our deep, productive soil, and how the decisions we make today will affect the health of the Zumbro River and groundwater that we drink for generations to come. But most importantly, learn three things anyone can do to help clean the river and prevent floods.

Award-winning Author and Naturalist Kevin Strauss, M.S. Ed., is a popular speaker on natural history topics in Southeastern Minnesota. Chimney Swifts of Southeastern Minnesota – “The sun is setting in a clear summer sky when your eye is drawn skyward by an odd twittering sound. Even stranger, you observe a gathering of some flying creatures wheeling above an old brick chimney. Around and around they circle, with a few individuals dipping suddenly toward the chimney top then returning to the rest. Their darting dipping movement and the twittering sound reminds you of bats, but something is wrong: bats emerge at dusk and fly away—these flyers seem to be congregating. Then, one or two drop abruptly into the chimney, and soon the whole wheeling darting flock spirals suddenly into the chimney like a small tornado being sucked down a manhole; like something out of Harry Potter. Now the air is empty and silent. What have you seen? They’re not bats, and they’re not chimney sweep birds, they’re Chimney Swifts.” (www.suite101.com/birds).

Greg will discuss this interesting bird and how to observe this unique behavior.  He will present his observations on the current state of the Chimney Swift in SE Minnesota and the danger they face due to destruction of old chimneys and their need for new roosting sights.
